Indeed, many parents are opting to build (or create) study rooms for their kids in an effort to assist them in getting the best grades they can. One of the first things that you need to keep in mind when creating a study room for your kids is that if you want your children to use the room regularly, you need to make it comfortable and inviting.
Lighting and furnishings is both key to ensuring that your kids’ study room is all that it can be. In addition to bright and efficient overhead lighting, you are going to want to ensure that desks and corners have direct lighting available as well, preferably in the form of table and floor lamps.
You are going to want to make sure that each kid has their own designated study area within the room – this may mean that you have to purchase multiple desks. An alternative to several desks is to use a single, larger study surface.
This could be either a counter or a table. Additionally, you are going to want to ensure that the seating that you purchase is appropriate for the table(s) or desk(s) that you choose – this is very important to your child’s comfort.
Your child’s new study area should incorporate all study aids that they may need in the comfort of their home. This could include books and shelves, encyclopedias, or a computer with internet access.
Additionally, you are going to want to keep this study area well stocked with pencils, papers, and other materials that your child will need through the course of their studies. However, if you want your kids to feel comfortable in their new study, you do not want to make it look or feel too much like a school classroom. This can make the study room less inviting.
Finally, it is important that you keep your new study room free from distractions. This means that you should nix the TV and/or video games and possibly even the radio.
Depending on your child’s personality, music may either enhance or inhibit their ability to study. If you have multiple children, you may want to allow them to use MP3 players selectively, rather than putting a non-personal music player in the room.
In addition, you really should let your kids have some input regarding the design and function of their new study room. Doing so, can make the room seem more like their own and therefore make them more likely to use it on a regular basis?
You may want to consider designating some wall space for them to display their work on, or perhaps a white or chalk board for you (or them) to leave motivational messages and/or reminders.
