Houseplants add a touch of vitality to a home, whether it is a large home or an apartment. They also provide a source of clean indoor air. Some people seem to have a green thumb when it comes to plants; they thrive and grow easily under their care. Often times though, they have just selected the right plant for their home. Growing plants indoors is not as difficult as some believe if the right one is chosen.

For someone that doesn’t have a lot of time to care for plants and have little direct sunlight in the home, there are a variety of plants that will thrive in that kind of environment. Ivy is a top choice. It is an attractive green plant that is easy to take care of. These thrive in low light and less water. Another choice is the spider plant; many people choose to hang these in their front windows. They only need a little sun and a little water now and then to keep them happy and healthy.

There are also plants that thrive with little care and a lot of sunlight; perfect for those that enjoy sunny rooms but little time for plant care. A cactus is a perfect example of this. They don’t need much water at all and thrive in the sun. Some are amazingly beautiful like the Prickly Pear that flowers. Aloe is another popular choice in homes. It is an attractive green plant but it’s also a medicinal plant. Breaking off a leaf and squeezing out the aloe inside can sooth small burns quickly.

For something truly unique and easy to care for, a houseplant that grows in water can be a perfect choice. English Ivy is one of the most adaptive houseplants. This is a very low maintenance plant that can survive in little water, a lot of water or just placed in a glass bowl of water to grow. Another choice is bamboo. This is considered the hardest plant to kill and does nicely in a bowl of water. Glass bowl is best to avoid any chemicals from pottery and ceramics. Just refresh the water occasionally and watch it grow.

Indoor tropical plants are also a popular choice and these provide some clean indoor air to a room. The Dracaenas are popular plants that thrive with little water and low light. They can grow tall, like a tree, and live a long life. They do come in the dwarf variety also. Palm trees are also attractive in the home and choosing a dwarf species may be best like the Phoenix roebelini. It is easy to grow and has a short trunk. It can even tolerate air conditioning and small periods of low light.

An indoor office can always benefit with a houseplant or two around it. The crocus is a perfect choice as it’s a fragrant plant that is easy to grow. They can grow in full sun or partial shade, making them easy to care for. For a window sill in the office a garden geranium would be the right choice. They like sunny conditions or bright light and are very hardy.

Growing plants indoors doesn’t take a green thumb; it just takes the right kind of plant for the environment. They can be hung in baskets, grown in water, or potted and still thrive with little care and at times little light. Choosing the right plant will bring an air of life and beauty to any room.
